Productions for Spring through Summer in 2011

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

By William Shakespeare

The Nuffield Theatre Company and Headlong Theatre in association with Hull Truck Directed by Natalie Abrahami

3 – 19  February In the Main House

‘ Love looks not with the eyes but with the mindAnd therefore is winged Cupid painted blind...’
The Nuffield and Headlong’s re-imagining of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM sets Shakespeare’s best-loved comedy in a 1960s film studio where a Hollywood epic is in the making. Meanwhile Hippolyta’s turbulent off-camera affair with her costar Theseus is fast becoming the love-hate relationship of the century – and it’s not the only romance to have blossomed on set. Passions rise. Tempers fray. And filming is almost complete.
This vivid, thrilling new production of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM uses video, movement and music to re-locate Shakespeare’s funniest play in the centre of this magical whirlwind of passion and performance – and asks whether love, like beauty, is really only in the eye of the beholder. Combining Shakespeare’s original text with a rich and cutting edge production, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM follows the previous collaborations between The Nuffield and Headlong Edward Gant’s Amazing Feats of Loneliness and The Winter’s Tale.
What you’ll love…A fantastic Shakespeare play spliced with the heightened ‘glamour’ of a 60’s epic film in the making brought to you by a combination of acclaimed theatrical powerhouses and directed by Natalie Abrahami, Artistic Director of The Gate Theatre – what a great start to 2011!

Described as “Bang on the money (*****)”, by The Telegraph in its first short tour last year, we are delighted to be bringing Paines Plough’s highly acclaimed production of Mike Bartlett’s new play to the Nuffield.
“It could’ve been politicians or old men, an orchestra or ballet or something old like that something old, but it wasn’t. It was pop music. Young people, like us, dressed up as they want. Things are changing every day at the moment“.
1967. Kenneth and Sandra know the world is changing. And they want some of it. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE takes on the baby boomer generation as it retires, and finds it full of trouble. Smoking, drinking, ambitious and paranoid, one couple’s forty-year journey from initial burst to full bloom.
“Terrific lines and big laughs... Bartlett does the clash of generational world views with a devastating precision” The Guardian

Chouf Ouchouf

Groupe Acrobatique de Tangier

Devised and Directed by Zimmermann & de Perrot

Presented in association with Crying Out Loud

2 – 4 May in the Main House

A witty and highly skilled show for adults and children over seven.
We are delighted to present Groupe Acrobatique de Tangier, a company of twelve Moroccan acrobats, with their new production, CHOUF OUCHOUF produced and directed by award winning Swiss artists Zimmermann and de Perrot. Weaving together contemporary performance and traditional Moroccan acrobatics in a poetic exploration of North African culture, CHOUF OUCHOUF reflects the daily life in the Medina. In the Medina, the old quarter, it’s ten to a house, and a hundred to the narrowest street. Shout or you won’t be heard; push to the front or never be seen. Life and colour lie around every corner, animals and cigarette hawkers fill the squares. The city is unruly, chaotic, but no matter – beneath the clamour and fights of the market are the whispers of its other life. Dusk falls like a shutter, then the night. Silently the walls open, and amid the maze-like streets and along the rooftops figures move on secret agendas. What, or who, is in the bag?
CHOUF OUCHOUF (literally “look, but take a real good look”) captures the danger, joy and urgency of life in Tangiers. The production arrives at the Nuffield hot on the heels of its London run at the Queen Elizabeth Hall.
“With an insouciant brilliance, they fill the stage with multiple back-flips, dizzying cartwheels, perilous human pyramids and vaulting trampoline stunts… everyone was spellbound”. The Guardian on previous show Taoub
“The mix of skill [and] sleight of hand is irresistible, and the piece has a gleeful magpie tendency – thieving from absurdism, popular cartoons, surrealism and modern dance”. The Guardian on Zimmermann & de Perrot’s recent LIMF show Öper Öpis at the Barbican
What you’ll love…Highly skilled, vibrantly Moroccan, chaotic, energetic, CHOUF OUCHOUF combines some of the best international acrobatic theatrical skills.

Bully Boy

A new play by Sandi Toksvig

The Nuffield Theatre Company

Directed by Patrick Sandford

10 – 28 May in the Main House

Major Oscar Hadley is flown to the front line to probe allegations of severe misconduct within a self-styled ‘Bully Boy’ unit of the British army. When young squaddie, Eddie Clark, from Burnley is interrogated Oscar begins to discover that ‘truth’ in a modern insurgency can be a pointof view rather than a fact.
Sandi Toksvig tackles the challenging moral issues of contemporary military occupation and its effect on the mental health of serving soldiers. She asks the question, ‘What makes a hero?’ In this ferociously gripping story, Sandi Toksvig writes with startling insight and tenderness about the minds of soldiers.
Nationally known and loved as a broadcaster, Sandi Toksvig is also a writer of great skill.
What you’ll love… Commissioned by The Nuffield, this new play is enthralling and emotionally compelling. Unmissable.

Very Hard Times

Publick Transport

7 – 8 March in the Studio

Following the hilarious Department of Smelling Pistakes last year, Publick Transport return to attempt a deeply relevant play about the state of the nation…and fail magnificently.
What happens when a hard-working, honest man can no longer afford to keep his wife in the style to which she has become accustomed? Tackling the thorny issue of economic hardship, Publick Transport presents a reinterpretation of Dickens’ classic so breathtakingly radical that it bears no resemblance to the original whatsoever! Replete with wicked humour, musical treats and visual delights (not to mention theatrical incompetence, petty squabbles and nervous breakdowns) Publick Transport grabs three generations of theatre-goers by the throat and drags them kicking and screaming back to the 19th century.
Time 7.30pmTicket Prices £10 (concessions £8)

You’re Not Like The Other Girls Chrissy

Created and performed by Caroline Horton
14 – 15 March in the Studio
Paris 1945. Christiane waits for a ticket to England that will reunite her with her fiancé. While she waits, this delightfully irrepressible mademoiselle recounts the love story which started at Cheadle Tennis Club between her – an eccentric, acutely-myopic Parisian – and a tongue-tied English teacher from Staffordshire. A tender, comic portrayal of one woman’s experience of love and war. Comic theatre at its most moving and inspiring.
Caroline Horton won Solo Performer, The Stage Awards 2010 for this charming one-woman show. Commissioned by China Plate/Warwick Arts Centre/mac.
Time 7.30pmTicket Prices £10 (concessions £8)

Bourgeois & Maurice – Shedding Skin
1 – 2 April in the Studio
Taking time out from their busy schedule of gazing at their own reflections, critically acclaimed alt-cabaret duo Bourgeois & Maurice bring their full length show to Southampton hot on the heels of a hit run at the legendary Sadlers Wells theatre in London.
Bourgeois & Maurice are a musical double act with style as sharp as their wit. Part-cabaret, part-theatre, part-catwalk freakshow, their songs blend unashamedly catchy pop hooks with bitingly satirical lyrics.
“Gloriously inappropriate decadence” The Guardian.

Black humour, cinematic intimacy and physical storytelling combine in this poetic and funny performance road trip. Blackman’s characters inhabit a twilight sensual world where they struggle with love, conflict and hope.

Exterminating Angel

An Improvisation Future Ruins and The Nuffield Theatre
5 – 7 May in the Studio
A casual meal between friends becomes something far stranger when the group’s behaviour suddenly starts to change. As the rules of logic gradually disappear from the room, the friends find themselves in a terrifying predicament that cuts to the heart of who they are. Improvised afresh each night in a radically naturalistic style, this is theatre that picks apart the minutiae of social behaviour and exposes the horror that lies beneath it.
Inspired by the Surrealist films of Luis Buñuel and the atmospheric theatre of Maurice Maeterlinck, Future Ruins cordially invite you to an evening you won’t easily forget.
